A review of Hawaii Deep Water Cable Program and geothermal development in Hawaii

Description:The Hawaii Deep Water Cable Program (HDWCP) is a research and development effort to determine the feasibility of installing and operating a submarine power transmission system between the Islands of Hawaii and Oahu in the Hawaiian Archipelago. The benefits of such a system have been identified and discussed in past documents. The purpose of this briefing is to summarize the present status of technology transfer opportunities from this R&D effort. This research is fully consistent with the U.S. Department of Energy, Electric Energy Systems, program strategy of long-term, high-risk, potentially high-payoff research that will meet national security objectives, protect public health and safety, and fulfill efficiency and fuel substitution objectives. It supports the national objective of providing reliable sources of electricity at the lowest possible cost with minimal adverse environmental impact.
