Description:COAL_MINES_UNDERGROUND_2009_IGS_IN is an ESRI polygon shapefile that shows underground coal mines in west-central and southwestern Indiana, including all documented underground mines that have operated since the late 1800s. These data were extracted from the Coal Mine Information System of the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS). Original source information includes company mine maps, field maps and notes of IGS geologists, IGS publications, and Indiana State Mine Inspector Reports. Scale of source data ranges from 1:4,800 to 1:100,000. Attributes of this shapefile include a unique identification number ("Mine_Numb") that has been assigned by the Indiana Geological Survey to each mine, the coal bed in which the mine operated ("Coalbed"), and the average thickness (in feet) of coal in the mine ("THK_AVG"). This resource is available for download as a compressed zip file.
