A New Model for Geothermal Exploration of Non-Volcanic Systems In Extended Terrains

Basic Information
Author: McNitt, J.R.
Description:Existing geologic models of geothermal systems work reasonablywell for the exploration of systems clearly associated withactive, or recently active, volcanic centers. The poor results ofexploration drilling undertaken during the last few years in thenon-volcanic systems of the western United States, however, indicate that the model being used for exploring these systemsrequires significant modification to be useful. Based onconsiderations of local and regional geology, as well as ondrilling results, it is proposed that the presence of large tiltedfault blocks, characteristic of extended terrains, are essential tothe development of this type of non-volcanic geothermal system.
