In late 1978, Getty Oil Company began geothermal resource investigation field efforts in the Beowawe Geysers Area, Eureka County, Nevada. The objectives included acquisition of geotechnical data for understanding the nature and extent of the geothermal resource boundaries south of the known resource area. Fourteen shallow (~500 feet) temperature-gradient holes plus geophysics were used to select the site for a deep exploratory well, the Collins 76-17, which was completed to a total depth of 9,005 feet. Maximum downhole recorded temperature was 311F, but no flow could be induced.
